In January of 2012, Trinidad School District began the process of preparing the budget for the 2012-2013 school year. The district reached out to various stakeholders in the community in an effort to create three budget advisory councils. The councils were comprised of administrators, teachers, students, parents, union representatives, community business leaders, and other community stakeholders. Each council was responsible for reviewing one of three potential budget options and working together to find areas in the budget where cuts could be made. Each council chairperson was asked to submit a written status report of their council's recommendations to the superintendent and the Board of Education.
