| Welcome Back Letter to Community for 2010 School Year! |
Dear Students, Parents, Staff, and Community Members of Trinidad School District #1,
Where did the summer go? It seems like just yesterday when we were wishing the kids all the best for a safe and fun-filled break. As the new school year approaches, I am extremely excited about the opportunities before us. We have developed a district calendar providing a four day school day week throughout the vast majority of the year. The new calendar does not sacrifice any student learning time, but at the same time provides Friday’s for professional development of staff and opportunities for our kids to attend extra-curricular activities without sacrificing any academic instructional time.
The District staff and the Board of Education are committed to continuously raising the bar in our collective efforts to improve student achievement not only in core subject areas, but also emphasizing the importance of developing your “whole” child. We are bringing back the arts (music, art, and drama) in a big way in all of our schools. Programs such as WAIT (Why am I tempted?) are being introduced in the interest of developing character and our children’s social and emotional wellness. We will continue to look for opportunities to help our children find new and creative ways to learn by doing, rather than just memorizing from a textbook. Our MESA program at the middle school is a prime example of this type of program. We have a responsibility to teach our kids to be responsible stewards of our environment, and we hope to engage them in meaningful projects this school year, such as water conservation. Putting together a plan that optimizes the use of technology in our children’s learning will also be a major initiative of this new year.
Finally, recognizing the importance of nutritional wellness, we have decided to give all of our kids free breakfast in all grades K-12, and to give them a free lunch in grades K-5.
Our parents play a key role as essential learning partners. I would encourage your active participation in our schools. We will also broaden our outreach to you with more proactive information on your individual child’s academic program and will enhance the number of training opportunities on how you can become more involved in your child’s learning.
Please check out our web-site at www.TSD1.org for a wide range of information. We’ll see all the kids back in school on Friday, August 20.
Sincerely yours,
Mike Tranter
Superintendent
Trinidad School District #1
